Jim Berkman joined Salisbury University's coaching staff as the men's lacrosse head coach in 1987

Berkman was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame on Oct. 26, 2013, in a ceremony at the Grand Lodge Hunt Valley, Md. Salisbury claimed its 10th national championship in 2012 with a 14-10 victory over the State University of New York at Cortland at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. The Sea Gulls finished their season at 23-0 overall and 8-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference to earn a 17th conference title. With the team's win over Cabrini College during the season, Berkman became the first NCAA men's lacrosse coach across all divisions to win 400 games.
