Michael Markland was named the assistant mens lacrosse coach in August 2017. Markland is the longest tenured assistant coach in the history of the program after finishing his fifth season at Southwestern.

During Markland's time as the Pirates defensive coordinator and goalie coach he has overseen 13 All-Conference defensive selections. This includes having coached a Defensive Player of the Year (Will Thompson, 2021) and a Newcomer of the Year (Tyler Santos, 2019). The Pirates have had a winning record in each season of Markland's time at Southwestern, including 2019 and 2022 in which the Pirates tied the record for wins in a regular season going 10-7 and 10-5, respectively. In 2022, the Pirates broke the record for most wins in a regular and post season (11-5).

Prior to stepping into the collegiate ranks, Markland served as the associate head coach and defensive coordinator at Fort Mill High School in the Charlotte suburb of Fort Mill, South Carolina, where he helped the Yellow Jackets win the state championship in 2014. Four players received all-state honors during this time, including Defensive Player of the Year.
