Mike O’Neill begins his first season as the Husson head men’s lacrosse coach in 2021.

He enters the season with a 75-56 overall record.

PREVIOUSLY:

O’Neill landed at Husson after spending five (2013-17) seasons as the head coach at the University of California at Santa Cruz, where he guided the Banana Slugs to five consecutive (2013-17) Western Collegiate Lacrosse League (WCLL) Tournament appearances, including capturing the league title in 2013. The 2017 WCLL Division II Coach of the Year recipient led the University of California at Santa Cruz to a 35-42 overall record during his time on the Banana Slugs sidelines.

Prior to his stint at UC Santa Cruz, O’Neill served as an assistant coach at Ohio Wesleyan University from 1991-93. In three years in Delaware, Ohio, he helped lead the Battling Bishops to a 49-15 overall record with three North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) championships (1991-93), two NCAA Tournament final four appearances (1991 and 1993), including finishing as the National Runner-up in 1993 to Hobart.

Previously, O’Neill served as the head coach at the University of Vermont (1983-86) and guided the Catamounts to four consecutive winning seasons, a feat that has not be accomplished since the O’Neill era in Burlington. Upon leaving Vermont, O’Neill was the program’s all-time career leader in wins (40) and winning percentage (.741). To this day, he is still remains all-time leader in winning percentage. He also worked as assistant at the Ohio State University for two years (1981-82) and helped the team make a pair of Midwest Lacrosse Association (MLA) tournament appearances, including finishing as the MLA runner-up in 1981.

PERSONAL:

Coach O’Neill graduated from the University of Vermont in 1980 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education. He earned his Master’s in Education from the Ohio State University in 1981 and completed all but dissentation for a PhD in Athletic Administration from the Ohio State University in 1987. He also earned a Juris Doctor degree from Capital University in 1990.

A native of Redding, Conn., O’Neill attended Kent School.
