Downey was a four-year player at Susquehanna University. He led the River Hawks to a Landmark Conference championship in 2013 and 2014. At Susquehanna, he appeared in 29 games with two goals, two assists and 21 ground balls.

He previously was a junior varsity coach in the River Dell School District.

Downey received his bachelor's degree in entrepreneurship from the Sigmund Weis School of Business at Susquehanna University.
