Scott Dangel

Profile
Scott Dangel has quickly risen the ranks of the Oglethorpe men’s lacrosse coaching staff.

He first joined the athletic department as an assistant coach in January 2021 before being named interim head coach prior to the 2022 season. Shortly after a successful spring in the interim role, Dangel earned promotion to the position of permanent head coach.

In Dangel’s two seasons as part of the Oglethorpe men’s lacrosse program, the team made tremendous strides. As defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator in his first year (2020-21), Dangel drastically lowered the team’s goals allowed per game, then as interim head coach in his second year (2021-22), he turned more attention to the offense where the team raised its scoring output by more than 50 percent.

Individual Success Under Dangel’s Leadership
Dangel guided several Petrels to individual success during the 2022 season. At the top of the list was Addison Irwin, an All-SAA second team selection who ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III with 294 saves this season, No. 4 in NCAA for saves per game, and moved up to No. 19 all-time in NCAA history with 775 career saves. Irwin broke the Oglethorpe single-season, career saves and saves percentage records, and he broke the Southern Athletic Association records for single-season saves while moving up to No. 2 in the SAA for career saves percentage.

Also under Dangel’s tutelage, Carsen Van Note ranked No. 33 nationally for face-off winning percentage, and Richard Bedgood IV ranked No. 74 in goals per game. Bedgood also set the Oglethorpe record for most goals in single game (nine).

The team started 5-4 starting and ending with big wins over Warren Wilson and Averett, respectively.

Prior to Oglethorpe
Dangel served as head coach for Oak Mountain junior varsity (2017) and varsity (2018) boys’ lacrosse. He also was a lacrosse camp instructor for Miles Jones Roswell Lacrosse Camp and Gamebreaker Georgia Gwinnett Lacrosse Camp in 2021.

Personal

Dangel graduated from Shorter University in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science degree in interdisciplinary studies. While studying at Shorter, he was a four-year starting defensive midfielder, two-time team captain, and was a volunteer assistant coach one semester. Dangel currently resides in Buford, Georgia.
