Zach Thomas

Profile
Zach Thomas begins his sixth season as a member of the Christopher Newport coaching staff after building up an impressive résumé as both a player and coach.

Since arriving at CNU, he has helped the Captains establish a new benchmark for success during each of his first five years. During his time with the program, Thomas has helped Christopher Newport register at least 10 victories each season, highlighted by a program-best 15-5 campaign in 2018 that saw the squad advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to setting a new standard for wins, Thomas has also guided a record-setting offensive attack. The 2018 squad established new single-season marks for goals (259), assists (165), and points (424). Overall, the program’s top-five single-season outputs for goals, assists, and points-per-game have all come under Thomas’ watch.

Aided by the electric attack, Christopher Newport boasts a 60-27 record over the past five years and climbed as high as 15th in the USILA National Coaches Poll.

Before arriving in Newport News, Thomas served on the coaching staff at Roanoke from 2010-12. During his time on the sidelines, he helped coordinate scouting and recruiting and was promoted to head assistant coach in 2011. While overseeing an offensive attack that ranked among the top-five nationally, he helped lead the Maroons to a program-record 18 wins in 2010 and a run to the National Semifinals in 2011.

Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Thomas was a two-time All-American at Roanoke. One of the most decorated players in program history, he capped off his career ranked fourth in scoring, fifth in goals, and tied for sixth in assists. A three-time All-ODAC selection, he earned the 2009 Roanoke College Athlete of the Year honor as well.
