Recruit Profile
6'4", 180 lbs, lefty goalie. Multiple Varsity sports since freshman year. Very coachable, smart and rational player. Top caliber student with multiple leadership roles in academic extracurriculars.

Hi, I’m Gus von Metzsch, and I’m a 6’4'' lefty goalie in the class of 2025. I began playing lacrosse 7 years ago, in 3rd grade, starting out on my local youth team. Since then I have played for multiple local teams, club programs, and most recently at my high school, Piedmont High School (PHS) in Piedmont, California. At PHS, I earned a starting spot on our Varsity team last spring, as a freshman, and I started every Varsity game. I made 17 saves in our league championship game to beat our rival, Bishop O’Dowd, to win the league. Beyond team play, I practice on my own, with older teammates, and with coaches, in addition to attending events every summer, including Goaliesmith events like their TGE camp this past summer. I also began playing water polo my freshman year, and by the end of the year I earned a Varsity spot as goalie. I love the position and think it fits my skills and personality well.

I am a highly disciplined person, and this translates into my actions both on and off of the field. On the field, I remain calm, directing the defense, and ensure that I am constantly aware of my surroundings. I snap to the shot, and then scan the field to ensure that I make the right pass on a clear, not missing an opportunity but not rushing, knowing that if needed, I am very comfortable taking the ball out of the crease and advancing it myself.

I am also very disciplined off the field. I maintain a 4.0 unweighted GPA (4.25 weighted freshman year). I am taking or have taken APCSP, APCSA, AP Chemistry, Honors Math Analysis, Honors Spanish 4, and AP Calc BC. I will be continuing to pursue academic challenges into the future, including registering myself to take advanced math courses at the University of California Berkeley starting my junior year, as I will run out of more advanced options at my high school. I am the tournament captain and program director for my school’s debate team, and I am consistently qualifying for and winning Varsity elimination rounds after winning a JV tournament last year and moving up. Additionally, I am our successful mock trial team’s vice president and a member of the robotics team. I look forward to continuing to compete at high levels, both on and off the field.

I am writing to recommend Gus Von Metzsch as an applicant to your school and give my strongest endorsement. Gus is an exemplary leader who has shown his worth through effective leadership, empathy, and the ability to complete any mission with professionalism and integrity. I have had the honor of coaching Gus for the past two years at Piedmont High School as well as the Bay Area Dragons Lacrosse Club. As his coach it was my estimation that Gus was an obvious choice to lead our Piedmont and Dragons team into competition, and Gus has quickly become an integral part of the decision-making process for this season. Having coached at the collegiate, high school, and youth levels I can say with certainty that young men such as Gus are rare in their maturity and ability to effectively communicate on an interpersonal level with not only his peers, but his coaches as well. I could not be prouder of his achievements and how Gus has grown into a young man. Integrity, honor, empathy, and unquestionable leadership qualities are all words that best describe Gus Von Metzsch. I highly recommend Gus Von Metzsch.
