A 1988 graduate of Loch Raven High School, Breakey attended Franklin & Marshall where she totaled 92 goals, 30 assists and 122 points in just two seasons in 1989 and 1990. She is still ranked in school history in goals, points and assists.

After winning a Middle Atlantic Conference championship as a freshman, Breakey scored 61 goals as a sophomore which ranks seventh on the school's all-time list for a single-season, while adding 20 assists for a total of 81 points to rank 12th in school history.

Following her two seasons with the Diplomats where she was a two-time All-American, Breakey transferred to Division I Towson for her final two seasons in 1992 and 1993. In two years with the Tigers, she totaled 78 goals, 25 assists and 102 points which ranks 13th on the school's career list.

As a team captain in 1993, Breakey totaled 52 points and 40 goals and was selected as a Third Team All-American on defense.

Breakey also played field hockey at both schools before graduating from Towson in 1994 with a bachelor of science degree in psychology. She was inducted in to the Towson Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005.

In 1994, Breakey was a member of the US Lacrosse team as a midfielder and defender. She returned to Towson in 1996 and spent two seasons as the assistant women's lacrosse coach in 1996 and 1997.

Breakey was inducted into the US Hall of Fame, Greater Baltimore Chapter in 2013.

Breakey also owns a BSN from University of Maryland, Baltimore and a MPH from Johns Hopkins Univeristy Bloomberg School of Public Health.
