The 2020-21 season will be John Espey’s 17th year as an assistant men’s lacrosse coach at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

Espey is currently an associate professor of physical education and Assistant Director of Athletic Facilities at Stony Brook University, where he served as the Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach from 1987-2004.

Prior to his stint with the Sea Wolves, Espey was at the helm of the Duke men’s lacrosse program from 1976-1981 and also served as a graduate assistant at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill from 1975-1976.

Espey graduated from SUNY Cortland with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education and from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill with a Master’s Degree in Teaching.

Throughout his career, Espey has served on the NCAA Division-I Championship Committee (2003-2004), NCAA Division-I Playoff Advisory Committee (2002-2003), and was President of the America East Lacrosse Coaches Association (2003-2003).

Outside of collegiate lacrosse, Espey was an assistant coach for the Long Island Lizards of Major League Lacrosse from 2004-2011 and has been a Team Liaison for the United States Men’s Lacrosse National Team since 2012.

He currently resides in Commack, NY.
