Shields is in his second season of coaching women's lacrosse with the Cavs after spending his last eight years coaching high school lacrosse. Played at University of Mount Olive (16')

In 2018, he began assisting with the women's lacrosse program and joined the team on the sidelines for games when the men's team doesn't play.

Two summers ago he coached Mercer Island High School at the National High School Lacrosse Showcase. Shields also coached Team Washington for the high school select club team the past two summers for rising ninth and 10th graders. He also spent the last eight summers coaching the Mercer Island lacrosse camp, working with youth development.

Before that Shields played lacrosse at the University of Mount Olive. During his time there he was a team captain in 2016, played in the USILA DI/DII north vs. south all-star game, a First-Team All-Conference Carolinas selection in 2015 and 2016, selected for Conference Carolinas All-Tournament team in 2015, and also a Second-Team All-Conference Carolinas selection in 2014.

He was voted the teams offensive most valuable player 2015 and 2014, ended career as the No. 1 in overall points in school history, finishing with 230 points (147 goals & 83 assists). Shields helped lead his team to first ever NCAA Tournament in 2016, in only the teams fourth year as a program. In addition to his accomplishes on the field Shields was selected as a 2016 USILA DII Scholar All-American.
