Coach Richard Aberle enters his first season as head coach of the Vikings men’s lacrosse program.

He comes to Hudson Valley after serving two years as an assistant coach at Union College, a NCAA Division III program in Schenectady, NY.

During his time at Union College, Coach Aberle and the Union College coaching staff, under Hall of Fame head coach Paul Wehrum, were voted the 2019 Coaching Staff of the Year and East Region Coaching Staff of the Year by the Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches’ Association following a 14-4 record and an appearance in the third round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

Prior to his coaching stint at Union College, Coach Aberle spent two seasons as the offensive coordinator and assistant men’s lacrosse coach at Green Mountain College in Poultney Vermont.

Coach Aberle also brings extensive coaching experience from the summer camp circuit. He served for seven years as a coach for Hall of Fame Coach Dom Starsia at his camps at the University of Virginia. Aberle also coached in camps at Princeton, Brown, Hobart, and the United States Military Academy.

Richard had a successful four-year playing career as a four-year starter for Green Mountain College. During his career, he led his team in scoring three times and was named the offensive player of the year following his junior season. In his senior season, Aberle contributed on 63 percent of his team’s scores and led the Eagles to their first post-season appearance in program history.

Originally recruited at Bard College, Aberle was named Bard College’s freshman male athlete of the year. Before beginning his intercollegiate career, Aberle was co-captain and a two-year starting attackman in high school. In addition to playing lacrosse in high school, Aberle was a member of the alpine ski team at Northwood in Lake Placid, NY.

Coach Aberle graduated from Green Mountain College with a degree in philosophy and history. Richard lives in Waterford, NY.
